The Tribute In Light ® is one of the most stunning works of public art ever produced. Two majestic blue beams are shone skyward annually, from dusk on September 11th to dawn on September 12th.
Visible in a sixty-mile radius on a clear night, the Tribute has become a renowned icon honoring the dead and injured, as well as those who worked so hard to get New York City through that ordeal.
The Tribute is comprised of eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares that echo the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers. It is assembled each year on a roof near the World Trade Center site. The memorial reaches 4 miles up and is the strongest shaft of light ever projected from earth into the night sky. It is particularly stunning when clouds are present, as shown in the photo below.
To help ensure the future of the Tribute, please support the Municipal Art Society’s efforts to keep the lights shining by making a donation online or by calling +1 (212) 935-3960. Alternatively, anyone with a US cell phone can text the word “TRIBUTE” to the number 20222 to make a one-time donation of $10 towards the future of Tribute in Light.
